Presenters will share their experiences, hopes, and views of life on the reservation.  We will explore how history impacts contemporary life.  There will be opportunities to discuss the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, generational trauma and how these historical events are part of daily life here on Pine Ridge.

Some of the sites that may be visited include Red Cloud Indian School, Wounded Knee, Wind Cave National Park, Crazy Horse monument, Red Cloud Renewable, The IHS hospital, and Thunder Valley.  We have added many new sites. We can customize your experience. Talk with us about your desires.

Meals

The kitchen at the Pine Ridge Reconciliation Center is well stocked with cookware and utensils for meal prep. There is a grocery store across the street, Buche, with a broad selection of groceries. We encourage you to purchase your ingredients locally, when possible. This is another way to support the Pine Ridge community.  The center staff will work with you to provide some of your meals. You are welcome to join the community meals we provide, or you can provide your own meal.

Menu planning is an important part of having an enjoyable experience during your retreat so that you can focus on the people of Pine Ridge.  Here are some tips and pointers that you might find helpful:

  • Making crockpot meals is a great way to save time and help keep the building cool. You can prep in the morning and come back to the center in the evening and dinner will be ready.

  • Plan out easily packable lunches in case you are eating on the go.

  • The group is responsible for the preparation of all meals eaten on-site unless otherwise arranged. Since we are providing meals for the homeless community you have the option of eating what we prepare for the community. Our cooks are happy to work with you to help make your meals.

  • The center has many staple items already in our fridge and cupboards. Please use what is already open before opening a new bottle or jar! (ex: ketchup, mustard, Miracle Whip, butter, salad dressings, etc)

-The Doctrine of Discovery

“The notion of discovery is a racist colonial concept that assumes the dehumanization of people of color. If you don’t believe me I welcome you to put your car keys and smart phones out in front of you and I will come by and discover them. Discovery requires the dehumanization of the people who are already there. Otherwise i would be stealing them.”
